Proposition
-----------
### What and why ###
Develop the simplest possible global illumination renderer. Not to be useful,
but as a development challenge. Could be a benchmark and basis for
experimentation.
### How ###
Restrict to:
* Diffuse materials
* RGB color
* Path-tracing
* Emitter sampling
* Random stochastic generator
* Triangles
* Pin-hole 'lens'
* Ward linear tone-mapping
* PPM images
Being:
* C++
* command-line package
* Windows executable
* Linux executable
It should be less than 2000 lines, and writeable in about 1 month.
### Aims ###
* simple as possible
* well-structured, clear code
Algorithmic model
-----------------
The simplest method of global illumination is pure monte-carlo path tracing. The
camera samples the image plane with many independent rays. Each ray is a single
chain of ray-steps between reflections. The chain is built recursively, each
step returning the emission at the reflection point plus the value of the next
recursion.
But this is too slow for small emitters and therefore indoor scenes. It must be
augmented with emitter sampling: Each node sends a sample ray to an emitter
position. Local emission is no longer included.
Sampling is done with an ordinary random generator. This allows the rendering to
be an indefinite progressive refinement. The reflection cosine-weighting is done
by importance sampling, and path termination with russian roulette. The image
sampling is stratified by pixels.
The scene is an array of triangles. Each has two quality attributes:
reflectivity and emitivity. Ray intersection is done exhaustively, choosing the
nearest. The model file format is one line per triangle with a header specifying
the view and image size.
Requirements
------------
There is only one use case. It follows basic command-line tool form: read a
file, process it, output a file.
### Use Case ###
(actor - user)
1. run program, input text command file
2. (maybe read output error message, then repeat from first step)
3. receive image file (PPM format)
### Use Case Features ###
command-line switches:
* image file pathname
* model file pathname
model file format:
* text
Analysis
--------
The packages are the same as for a full-scale renderer. The top level divides
into application-specific, and general. The application-specific part is divided
into reasonable parts. In this simplified form each package has only one class
(except modelling, with three).

Deployment
----------
Command-line program:
* in: command switches, model text file
* out: RGB image in PPM format
Implementation
--------------
Just straightforward, portable C++.
* ISO C++, with exceptions, no templates, no RTTI
* nothing platform specific
* no other dependencies
* tested with MS and GCC compilers
Test
----
Some simple scenes which can be compared with manual calculation. -- Various
permutations of triangle pairs emitting and reflecting each other at different
orientations and view angles.
Plan
----
### Estimate ###
* total size: 1000 lines (discluding reuse)
* rate: 3 minutes per line
* time: 50 hours ~ 13 days ~ 3 weeks ~ 0.6 months
### Construction Order ###
1. control
2. imaging
3. rasterization
4. illumination
5. interaction
6. modelling
### Possible Feature Additions ###
* Multi-threading for concurrent tracing...
* would be quite simple
* has platform dependencies
